Using litigation and campaign strategies, Optio works with local lawyers and advocates to liberalize abortion laws in countries where it is completely prohibited.
PROJECT: Challenging the Total Ban on Abortion in Honduras Through a Constitutional Claim
IMPACT: Winning the constitutional claim will result in women being able to legally terminate a pregnancy if: 1) her life or health is in danger, 2) the pregnancy is a result of sexual violence, or 3) if the fetus could not survive outside the uterus by itself.
At least 50 women have been criminalized for abortion over the last decade in Honduras
PROJECT: Using Domestic Impact Litigation to Prevent More Women Being Criminalized for Abortion
IMPACT: If our strategy succeeds, we will prevent women from being prosecuted for abortion in situations where there is an obstetric emergency or when a women needs to interrupt a pregnancy for health reasons.
