Working to Legalize and Improve Access to Emergency Contraception in Honduras
In November 2022, the pro-choice candidate Xiomara Castro became the first female president-elect of Honduras. She is a strong supporter of women’s rights and has committed to removing the ban on emergency contraception. In January 2022, President Castro included Optio and GE-PAE’s plan for expanding access to emergency contraception in her Presidential Degree. Over the past 5 months, Optio has been working with GE-PAE and OASIS to assess the regulatory landscape and document the availability and use of emergency contraception commodities. When the President lifts the ban on emergency contraception, we will work with GE-PAE and the Ministry of Health to improve access through registration, institutionalization, procurement and distribution, training and sensitization, and improving women’s knowledge about the new laws/policies and services available.
