Legal frameworks are needed that protect and promote the sexual and reproductive rights of women and girls across Latin America.

THE NEED:

In Honduras and across the region, restrictive laws, social stigma, and institutional barriers continue to undermine the sexual and reproductive rights of women and girls. Legal frameworks often fail to reflect international human rights standards, leaving communities without adequate protections or access to essential healthcare. There is a pressing need for academic and legal resources that reframe these issues through a gender and human rights lens and equip future legal professionals with the tools to drive change.

OUR APPROACH:

On November 25, 2024—International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women—Optio launched its latest publication, Sexual and Reproductive Rights from a Gender and Human Rights Perspective, with the support of the Faculty of Law at the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH). The book serves as both an academic resource and an advocacy tool, designed to deepen understanding of the intersection between reproductive rights, gender equality, and human rights obligations in national and international law.

To foster meaningful engagement, the launch event was structured as a space for dialogue between legal scholars, students, civil society leaders, and government officials. The initiative reflects Optio’s commitment to shaping legal discourse and empowering future legal professionals to defend and advance reproductive rights in Honduras and beyond.

IMPACT:

The book launch brought together over 120 participants, including professors, law students, government representatives, international cooperation agencies, and civil society organizations. The event marked a significant step in expanding legal literacy and sparking informed debate around reproductive rights and gender justice. The publication has already been adopted by legal educators at UNAH and is being used to support broader advocacy and capacity-building efforts throughout the country.
