The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights’ latest Annual Report highlights key human rights trends and challenges across Latin America—two of which Optio is actively working to address: access to contraception and media harassment of women and girls accused of having abortions.
In 2024, Optio contributed a report on the status of sexual and reproductive rights in Central America, which directly informed the IACHR’s findings. Our research played a pivotal role in shaping the country-specific chapters on Costa Rica and Honduras.
In Costa Rica, the report underscores barriers to healthcare access, including contraceptive methods and emergency contraception. Women often face a lack of information and unattainable requirements or are denied care altogether.
In Honduras, women and girls who have been arrested on accusations of having an abortion are being exposed by authorities in both traditional and social media. These breaches of privacy not only endanger lives but also fuel the stigma surrounding sexual and reproductive rights.
