On November 15, 2025, Optio brought together girls and mentors from Honduras, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic for the first regional gathering of our Safe Spaces Clubs—an event designed to strengthen leadership, deepen knowledge of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), and build a cross-border network of young advocates. What unfolded was far more than a training—it was a powerful moment of connection, transformation, and collective possibility.

For many of the girls, this was their first time leaving their communities—and their first time meeting peers from other countries who share similar experiences navigating stigma, inequality, and limited access to accurate information about their bodies and rights. Over several days, they participated in interactive workshops on topics including contraception, consent, gender-based violence, and self-advocacy. Just as meaningful, however, were the moments in between: the stories shared, the trust built, and the realization that they are not alone.

Mentors played a central role in the gathering, engaging in parallel sessions to strengthen their facilitation skills, exchange strategies, and build a regional network of support. This investment helps ensure that the impact of the gathering extends far beyond the event itself, as mentors return to their communities better equipped to guide and support the next generation of girls.

The energy and sense of possibility were palpable throughout. Girls left with new knowledge, greater confidence, and a network of peers they can continue to learn from and lean on. Many are already beginning to share what they learned—leading conversations in their schools, supporting one another, and challenging harmful norms.

By investing in girls’ leadership and creating spaces for connection and learning, we are hoping help build a generation that is informed, empowered, and ready to advocate for their rights.
